(03-02) 16:48 PST San Francisco --

A San Francisco jury convicted a 29-year-old Van Nuys man today of attempted murder and mayhem charges in a stabbing attack that left a 15-year-old girl seconds from death before a bystander saved her life.

Scott Chris Thomas, 29, showed no reaction as the verdicts were read in the May 19, 2007, attack on Loren Schaller at a Twin Peaks bakery. The jury deliberated less than a day before returning its verdicts.

A second phase in the trial, to determine whether Thomas was sane at the time of the attack, is set to begin Thursday and could take weeks to complete.

If Thomas is found to have been sane during the crime, he will likely face life in prison. If, however, he is found to have been insane, he will be sent to a mental hospital.

Prosecutor Scot Clark argued that the attack was premeditated and that Thomas, despite a history of mental problems, intended to decapitate Schaller and place her head in front of the business to terrorize the community.

Deputy Public Defender Stephen Rosen argued that his client was a psychotic who was not able to commit a premeditated offense such as attempted murder.

Neither side would comment as the case is still ongoing.

The case stirred outrage when state officials acknowledged they had bungled by letting Thomas out of prison by mistake without supervision the day before the crime. He was supposed to return to Los Angeles, but instead bought a hunting knife in San Jose and came to San Francisco.

Following the verdicts, Linda Schaller said her daughter is rebuilding her life after an attack that could have been fatal or left her right arm paralyzed. She has regained some use of the arm and is now pursuing a career in costume design.

"I'm incredibly grateful. Finally, we're getting some justice out of the San Francisco court system," Linda Schaller said after the verdicts.

The case had been stalled after Thomas' attorneys argued that he was unfit to stand trial. Now, she said, she hopes the jury finds that he was legally sane at the time of the attack.

"It's only one step - the next one could negate all of it," she said. "But the people of San Francisco saw the horrific nature of all of this and did the right thing."

She said the jury could have taken pity on the defendant, who has portrayed himself as a "poor boy."

"He's not a poor boy; he's a monster," she said.

Please, wherever you put him, make sure it is forever so he can never hurt another innocent person.

Shame that the death penalty can't apply to attempted murder. Thank goodness the innocent victim survived.
